New Level Academy is a small independent school with 22 pupils, many of whom have SEND or EHC plans and have experienced earlier disruption in their education. Safeguarding is a clear strength: the school meets the safeguarding standards, pupils feel safe and cared for, and staff build positive relationships. However, the quality of education is not good enough. Achievement, curriculum and teaching, inclusion, and leadership and governance were judged to need urgent improvement, while attendance and behaviour and personal development and wellbeing need attention. The independent school standards are not met for the quality of education and for leadership and management. There are some positive foundations, including a calm school environment, effective safeguarding systems, early work to improve attendance, and new trustees bringing useful expertise. Nevertheless, pupils make poor progress overall because teaching is inconsistent, the curriculum lacks breadth, assessment systems are weak, and support for disadvantaged pupils and pupils with SEND is not effective. Pupils' personal development, extra-curricular opportunities and careers guidance are also limited or inconsistent. Leadership lacks the capacity and challenge needed to secure rapid improvement, and governance has not ensured the independent school standards are consistently met. Leaders' next steps focus on strengthening quality assurance, assessment, adapting teaching to pupils' needs, and improving foundational reading.

  • Independent school standards are not met for quality of education and leadership/management.
