The Ryes College

The Ryes College is an independent special school for pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs and other complex needs, all of whom have an education, health and care plan and many of whom experienced significant disruption before joining. Inspectors found the school is performing at the expected standard overall: pupils are well supported to re-engage with learning, attendance is generally improving, behaviour is managed effectively, and most pupils achieve well from their starting points. Leadership and governance are effective, staff are well trained and supported, and the personal development, therapeutic and pastoral offer is a notable strength. Safeguarding standards are met. The main concerns are in assessment and teaching consistency. Assessment is not consistently precise across all subjects, so gaps in pupils' understanding are sometimes not identified or addressed quickly enough. In some instances, teaching moves on before pupils have secured important curriculum knowledge, and leaders have been asked to ensure reading, writing and mathematics gaps are consistently addressed. Post-16 provision was not graded because there are no sixth-form pupils and none are planned. The school also reported using one unregistered alternative provision.
