Aspiration House School is an independent special school for pupils aged 7 to 18, all of whom have autism and an education, health and care plan. This was a second progress monitoring inspection following earlier findings of non-compliance. The school still does not meet all the independent school standards checked, with remaining failures in part 1 on the quality of education and part 8 on leadership and management. However, inspectors found meaningful progress: leaders prioritise pupil welfare, safeguarding is strong, health and safety at the Aspiration House site is effective, staff training and morale have improved, curriculum pathways are better designed, and the school now meets the previously unmet standards in part 3 on welfare, health and safety and part 5 on premises. The school has stopped using its Inspire House site after health and safety concerns and has informed the Department for Education. Despite this progress, significant weaknesses remain. Leaders still lack a rigorous enough process to evaluate whether every standard is met, so they cannot assure themselves of consistent compliance or take decisive action where needed. The curriculum does not yet account precisely enough for pupils’ needs and starting points, and teaching is inconsistent in building pupils’ knowledge. Staff do not always follow the adopted phonics scheme faithfully, teaching strategies are not consistently aligned with the curriculum or pupils’ needs, and misconceptions are not always identified and addressed. Pupils make some progress but do not learn as well as they should. The impact of new curriculum and training is still in its early stages. Contextually, the school has only two full-time pupils on roll against a capacity of 24, and it has had repeated monitoring since its September 2025 standard inspection. After the first progress monitoring inspection in January 2026, the proprietor submitted an action plan that the Department for Education rejected. The interim headteacher and proprietor have made positive changes, but the school remains non-compliant in key areas.

  • Teaching is inconsistent in how well it helps pupils develop their knowledge.
  • Staff do not always adhere to the school’s adopted phonics scheme, hindering pupil progress.
  • Teaching strategies are not consistently aligned with the school’s curriculum schemes or pupils’ starting points and needs.
