Boston Pioneers Free School Academy is a caring and inclusive primary school where support for pupils and families sits at the heart of its work. Inspectors found a calm, positive environment in which pupils are polite, respectful and feel safe, and where the school’s values of resilience, excellence, ambition, care and honesty are evident in pupils’ attitudes. The school has high expectations and provides strong pastoral support, including tenacious work to improve attendance, which has improved. It is part of the Voyage Education Partnership multi-academy trust, and leaders and trustees are described as having a clear moral purpose and ensuring the school is resourced effectively. The curriculum is ambitious and has been revised in response to low published outcomes in 2024, with improvements helping pupils recall prior learning more effectively. Reading is a priority, phonics teaching is well implemented, and pupils who speak English as an additional language or join at unusual points are supported very well, including through the school’s ‘language lab’. Pupils with SEND are accurately identified and well cared for, behaviour is calm, and safeguarding arrangements are effective. Children in the early years benefit from meaningful opportunities to practise letter formation and transcription. There are two main areas for improvement. Pupils in key stages 1 and 2 do not routinely get high-quality opportunities to develop writing across the curriculum, so their writing stamina is not as strong as it could be and spelling, punctuation and grammar errors are not consistently addressed. In addition, teaching is not always adapted precisely enough for pupils with SEND, and some pupils rely too much on adult support rather than learning independently and applying their understanding in new contexts. Overall, the school is performing well, with clear strengths in care, inclusion, reading and leadership, while writing and precise adaptation for SEND remain priorities.

Admissions: local authority offers data from the Department for Education. A school is oversubscribed when at least 5% of the families who put it first were not offered a place, and undersubscribed when everyone who put it first got in but 10% or more of its places were unfilled in the Department's school capacity survey (the latest survey is used for entry years it does not cover). Places: Department for Education, School capacity, from local authorities' annual survey as at 1 May. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024–25); the survey was not run in 2020. Places include sixth form places. Forecasts are the local authority's own for the school's planning area, an area it uses to plan places that is not the school's catchment area. The forecast starts from a head count in 2025; the dashed line is the Department's estimate of places in that area, including those the authority has firm plans for. Planned places are cumulative, and only those with firm plans are counted.

Source: Department for Education, School workforce in England. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024/25). Pupils per teacher counts full-time-equivalent pupils and teachers. Turnover is the share of a year's teachers (full-time equivalent) who were not at the school the following year, whether they moved to another school or left state-funded teaching. Turnover and sickness figures run one year behind the ratios. Sick leave is the share of teachers who took at least one day in the year, so it swings widely at small schools, where a few teachers can make it 0% or 100%. The national figures are for all state schools of the same type.
