Life Skills Hub Central is an independent special school for pupils aged 10 to 16, all of whom have EHC plans and primarily have social, emotional and mental health needs. The school applied for a material change to add post-16 provision for 16- to 19-year-olds at a new site and to change its premises and maximum pupil numbers. This was a material change inspection, not a standard graded inspection; inspectors assessed the school's likely compliance with the independent school standards if the changes go ahead. Inspectors found the school likely to meet the relevant standards. Leadership is a key strength: the proprietor and leaders are highly aligned, recruit staff with specialist skills, invest heavily in training, and provide effective oversight through an advisory governing board. Safeguarding, behaviour, health and safety, recruitment checks and premises are all well managed. The proposed post-16 curriculum is well planned, building on existing key stage 4 work with a focus on English, mathematics, preparation for adulthood, careers and supported work experience. Pupils benefit from a calm, respectful environment and strong therapeutic and SEND-informed support. The main practical concern is outdoor space, which is limited at both the current and proposed sites, particularly the new building; additional fencing there is also still to be installed. Leaders have mitigated this by securing agreements to use local parks and gym facilities and by planning clubs and activities. Overall, no significant compliance weaknesses were identified, and the school is likely to meet the independent school standards if the material change is approved.
