Norman House Independent School is a small independent school that was inspected for the first time after registering in June 2025. It provides education for pupils aged 11 to 16, many of whom have experienced disrupted schooling, trauma, or risk of exclusion, and most have SEND or an EHC plan. The inspection found that safeguarding standards are met, all independent school standards are met, and the school is fulfilling the expected standard across achievement, attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, inclusion, leadership and governance, and personal development and wellbeing. The school's main strengths are its nurturing, calm environment and its work to re-engage vulnerable pupils. Staff know pupils' needs well, work closely with families and external agencies, and provide an ambitious curriculum alongside strong personal development, careers guidance and enrichment. Behaviour is generally respectful, bullying is handled quickly, and attendance improves for many pupils. Leadership is effective, with good oversight from the proprietor, investment in support and facilities, and high staff morale despite recent leadership changes. There are still areas for improvement. The essential knowledge pupils need to remember is not consistently mapped, literacy and handwriting support is uneven, and teachers do not always adapt learning sharply enough using information about pupils' needs, which causes some variation in achievement. Persistent absence remains high for a small number of pupils, and strategies to address this need to be embedded more consistently. The report also notes that the school currently provides education for pupils above its registered age range and uses one unregistered alternative provision.

  • Leadership and governance provide effective oversight, compliance monitoring, and investment in facilities, staffing and specialist support.
  • Pupils' personal development is well woven through the curriculum, including relationships, safety, exploitation and online risks.

Areas for Improvement

  • Essential knowledge that pupils need to know and remember is not consistently mapped, so teachers cannot always check and address gaps with precision.
  • Support for literacy and handwriting is inconsistent, meaning pupils' work does not always reflect their learning.
  • Teachers do not always use information about pupils' needs sharply enough to shape learning activities, leading to variation in achievement.
  • Persistent absence remains high for a small number of pupils, and strategies to address it are not consistently embedded.
  • Achievement varies across some subjects, particularly where pupils' writing fluency is still developing.
  • The school currently provides education for pupils aged 11 to 17, outside its registered 11 to 16 age range.
  • The school uses one unregistered alternative provision.
