Blackpool Skills Academy is a small special school for pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs, many of whom are dual-registered elsewhere and attend temporarily or part-time. This was its first standard inspection since registering in July 2025. Inspectors found safeguarding standards not met and judged attendance, inclusion and leadership/governance as requiring urgent improvement; achievement, curriculum and teaching, and personal development need attention. The school does not yet meet several independent school standards consistently. Strengths include well-established vocational provision where staff have secure subject knowledge and pupils learn well, often gaining qualifications for further education or training. Staff are skilled at supporting pupils with SEMH, de-escalating challenging behaviour and building caring relationships, and pupils generally behave respectfully. Pupils also benefit from suitable relationships and sex education, mental health support including an in-house therapist, independent careers advice and some enrichment and work experience. However, the curriculum in English, mathematics and science is underdeveloped, pupils' starting points are not identified well enough, and systems for identifying and supporting SEND are weak. Attendance oversight and record-keeping are poor, safer recruitment and safeguarding records are not robust, and pupils' understanding of protected characteristics and fundamental British values is underdeveloped. Governance and oversight of the independent school standards are insufficient, although the proprietor showed some capacity to improve and took immediate remedial action where possible.
