Bright Fields School is a small independent specialist school for pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs and autism, all of whom have an education, health and care plan. This was its first standard inspection since registering with the Department for Education in August 2025, and it took place after a period of significant staffing disruption, including three headteachers since the pre-registration inspection and a new deputy headteacher in June 2026. Safeguarding standards are met, and the school is judged to be fulfilling the expected standard in achievement, attendance and behaviour, inclusion, and personal development and wellbeing. The school's strongest work is in helping pupils re-engage with education. Many pupils arrive with very negative prior experiences, prolonged absence or school refusal, and leaders use highly personalised, flexible approaches to improve attendance rapidly and build a calm, respectful culture. Pupils feel safe and supported, behaviour is positive and improving, and the personal development, wellbeing and preparation for adulthood programme is a clear strength. Inclusion is central to the school's work, with careful use of EHC plans, multi-agency support and tailored provision. However, there are important weaknesses in curriculum, teaching and leadership. Teaching is not yet consistently well matched to pupils' needs, particularly in early reading, where some staff lack expertise and checks on pupils' decoding and fluency are at an early stage. The planned curriculum is not translated clearly into classroom practice across all subjects, especially in mixed-age classes, so academic knowledge does not build securely over time. Leadership and governance also need attention: oversight is not precise enough to demonstrate impact or ensure that the independent school standards are met consistently. As a result, the standards for quality of education and leadership and management are not met, although leaders are taking steps to improve.
