Our Lady of Victories Catholic Primary School is a small Catholic primary school in London that is performing well overall. Pupils achieve very well from their starting points, with published outcomes significantly above national averages over time, particularly in phonics, reading and mathematics. Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities, disadvantaged pupils and those known to children’s social care are supported effectively and make strong progress. Attendance is significantly above national averages, behaviour is calm and positive, and pupils feel safe and well supported. The early years and inclusion provision are particularly notable, and safeguarding standards are met. Most areas of the school’s work are strong. Leadership and governance are highly astute, with accurate self-evaluation, high expectations and strong support for staff wellbeing. The personal development and wellbeing programme is coherent, well sequenced and enriched by a wide range of opportunities. The main area for development is curriculum and teaching, which is judged at the expected standard. The curriculum is broad and ambitious, and phonics is taught systematically, but in a few subjects and year groups teachers do not consistently choose the most effective learning activities, which can lead to some lack of pupil focus. Checks on pupils’ understanding are also not always sharply focused on making sure key concepts are fully secure before moving on. Leaders have accurately identified this as a priority. This was a full section 5 inspection under the renewed inspection framework at a Catholic school in the Diocese of Southwark. The school is smaller than average, with very low proportions of pupils eligible for free school meals and pupils with SEN support. The next steps are to embed the ambitious curriculum consistently across the wider curriculum and to further reduce non-illness related absences for all groups of pupils. Overall, this is a highly inclusive and successful school where pupils are well prepared for the next stage of their education.
