Roehampton Gate School is an independent special school for pupils with education, health and care plans, with a specialism in social, emotional and mental health needs and autism. This inspection found the school performing at the expected standard across achievement, attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, inclusion, leadership and governance, personal development, and post-16 provision. Safeguarding standards are met, and all independent school standards are met. The school has two sites, 52 pupils on roll including six in post-16, and has seen leadership changes with the current headteacher taking up post in January 2025. The report highlights a strong inclusive culture, effective support for pupils with SEND, positive relationships, good pastoral care and a well-designed personal development programme. Pupils make positive progress from their starting points, behave well in a calm environment, and are increasingly well prepared for adulthood and next steps. Leadership has improved staffing stability, culture and behaviour, and leaders are seen as having a clear capacity to sustain further improvement. The main areas for development are in teaching consistency. Learning intentions are not always precise enough, so activities do not always align closely with key knowledge. Opportunities for pupils to explain, justify and deepen their understanding are sometimes missed, and practice varies in how well staff check pupils’ understanding during lessons to adapt teaching. Leaders are already addressing these points through professional development and clearer expectations.
