Newstead Primary and Nursery School is a small, happy and nurturing school at the heart of its community. Inspectors found pupils achieve well overall, with outcomes by the end of key stage 2 broadly in line with national figures and stronger in 2024/25. The well-planned curriculum, typically strong teaching, effective phonics and a successful focus on writing and handwriting help pupils build the knowledge they need. Early years is well led, inclusive provision is a strength, and pupils with SEND and disadvantaged pupils are generally well supported. Behaviour is impressive and pupils feel safe, with safeguarding requirements met. Leadership is a notable strength: leaders have a clear 'Aim High' vision, an accurate view of the school, and strong support from staff and governors. Personal development, pastoral care and enrichment are well developed, and the school benefits from the 'Together as One' collaboration. However, attendance remains a significant concern. Rates are consistently low and well below national averages, and attendance for disadvantaged pupils and pupils with SEND is on a downward trend. Persistent absence is also much higher than nationally, and leaders' revised strategy is only at an early stage. Other areas for improvement include the Year 4 multiplication tables check, where outcomes have been consistently below national, and SEND targets, which are sometimes not specific enough to show the small steps pupils should make. The school has already begun work on these issues.
