Fountaindale School is a kind, caring and aspirational special school for pupils aged 3 to 18 with severe and profound learning difficulties, autism and complex medical needs. In this first inspection, leaders have built an ambitious curriculum organised around three pathways and tailored to EHC plans, with strong therapy input and close work with families and health professionals. Pupils feel safe, happy and proud, and they achieve well in the context of their SEND. The school's communication work is a particular strength, supported by varied systems and skilled reading and phonics teaching. Behaviour is positive and personal development is well promoted through rights-respecting work, pupil voice, clubs and careers opportunities from early years to sixth form. The trust provides effective support and challenge, and staff feel valued. However, practice is not consistently strong enough. Some classroom activities do not engage pupils fully, and some staff lack the expertise to meet complex or new pupils' needs, which creates inconsistencies and affects staff wellbeing. Leaders' self-evaluation does not yet use outcomes trends well enough to judge the impact of their work precisely.

Exclusion figures dropped in 2020 and 2021 because of school closures.

Source: Department for Education, School workforce in England. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024/25). Pupils per teacher counts full-time-equivalent pupils and teachers. Turnover is the share of a year's teachers (full-time equivalent) who were not at the school the following year, whether they moved to another school or left state-funded teaching. Turnover and sickness figures run one year behind the ratios. Sick leave is the share of teachers who took at least one day in the year, so it swings widely at small schools, where a few teachers can make it 0% or 100%. The national figures are for all state schools of the same type.
