Description
betaPool Academy, situated in Pool, Cornwall, is a mixed secondary school with academy status, offering an education to students from the ages of 11 to 16. The school's postal address is TR15 3PZ, and its coordinates are 50°13′49″N 5°16′17″W. With a capacity of 800 pupils and an enrollment of 904 at the time of January 2015, Pool Academy is a comprehensive institution that originally opened in 1896 and has undergone several expansions, including as part of the PFI Schools building scheme in 2003.
The school's historic building is now listed as a Victorian structure, which is being converted into housing. Pool Academy has been known by various names such as Pool Comprehensive School, Pool School and Community College, and Pool Business and Enterprise College, before gaining academy status in April 2011. Offering GCSE programs, Pool Academy is the home ground for Duchy Hockey Club.
However, the school experienced controversy in 2016 following the death of one of its students, Dagmara Przybysz, who was found hanged in the school's bathroom. While the coroner recorded an open verdict, there were reports of alleged bullying against the student due to her Polish nationality, although the school reported no prior reports of racism.
The school's recognition in the media was not ideal, as in January 2019, it was named among "The Worst Schools In The Country" by the Department for Education (DfE). Despite this, Pool Academy remains an active part of the educational landscape in Pool, striving to provide a high-quality education in a challenging and vibrant academic environment.
