The Milestone School is a special school for pupils aged 2 to 16, all of whom have an EHC plan, and it is part of the SAND Academies Trust. This was its first section 5 inspection; it had previously been inspected under section 8. Inspectors found the school performing well across the board, with effective safeguarding and good early years provision. Pupils attend well, benefit from strong routines and tailored support, and achieve well from their individual starting points. The curriculum has been substantially reviewed and is well structured across pathways, including The Space and early years. Staff have strong subject knowledge, use communication and sensory strategies well, and integrate EHC plan outcomes into bespoke programmes. Behaviour is managed consistently and poor behaviour has reduced. Pupils enjoy a broad range of experiences, careers education and work-related qualifications, and personal development is well supported. Leaders are well led and managed, with strong pastoral support and improved staff communication. The trust has extended leadership capacity, but some monitoring and quality assurance are still developing, particularly where curriculum pathways are newer and in early years. In a minority of subject-based lessons, teaching does not build precisely enough on what pupils already know, which can slow progress and leave misconceptions unaddressed.

Source: Department for Education, School workforce in England. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024/25). Pupils per teacher counts full-time-equivalent pupils and teachers. Turnover is the share of a year's teachers (full-time equivalent) who were not at the school the following year, whether they moved to another school or left state-funded teaching. Turnover and sickness figures run one year behind the ratios. Sick leave is the share of teachers who took at least one day in the year, so it swings widely at small schools, where a few teachers can make it 0% or 100%. The national figures are for all state schools of the same type.
