This was a full section 5 inspection of St Chrysostom's CofE Primary School, a larger-than-average Church of England primary school in the St John Chrysostom Federation, serving a diverse community. The school meets the expected standard across all inspected areas, and safeguarding standards are met. Pupils achieve securely overall, with reading and mathematics as particular strengths, and they are well prepared for secondary school. Disadvantaged pupils and pupils who speak English as an additional language are supported effectively and achieve well. Behaviour, attendance and personal development are strong. Pupils are polite, respectful and focused in lessons, attendance has improved steadily, and pupils benefit from a wide range of trips, clubs, leadership roles and pastoral support. Leaders know the community well, governance is effective, and staff feel well supported. The early years provision is generally strong, with warm relationships and a clear focus on language and communication. The main areas for improvement are the precision of support for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities, where staff are not always clear about the most important priorities, and the consistency of high standards in written work across the curriculum. In the early years, staff occasionally expect children with less well-developed skills to complete tasks before they are ready, which can lead to frustration or disengagement.

Areas for Improvement

• Support for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities is not precise enough, so some staff are unclear what to focus on and some pupils do not build knowledge as well as they could.
• High standards of written work are not consistently maintained across the curriculum.
• In the early years, staff sometimes expect children with less well-developed skills to complete tasks before they are ready, which can cause frustration or disengagement.
