Selwyn Primary School

This was Selwyn Primary School’s first section 5 inspection; it had not previously been inspected under section 5 and received an ungraded section 8 inspection in 2019. The school is an academy converter within the Newham Community Learning trust and has an additionally resourced provision for 21 deaf pupils. Inspectors found an exceptionally strong school with no significant weaknesses identified. Pupils achieve well, including in national assessments, and produce high-quality work across the curriculum. The school is highly inclusive, and support for pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities is exceptional, including exemplary provision for deaf children and a learning support provision for pupils with complex needs. Reading is a particular strength: phonics is taught precisely, books closely match pupils’ phonics knowledge, and effective catch-up support helps any pupil who falls behind. The curriculum is extremely ambitious and well sequenced from nursery to Year 6, and teachers use strong subject knowledge, skilful questioning and regular recaps to embed learning. Behaviour is excellent, pupils are calm and polite, and personal development is a considerable strength, with a wide range of leadership, extra-curricular and performance opportunities. Staff are proud to work at the school and feel well supported, while governance and trust oversight are highly knowledgeable. Safeguarding arrangements are effective.
