Founded in 1977, Thorns Collegiate Academy was established to replace Quarry Bank Boys School and Quarry Bank Girls School, maintaining a legacy stretching back to the early 1930s. Over the years, the school evolved and expanded, accommodating more than 1,300 students aged 11 to 16 by the 1990s. Thorns is a specialist Arts College, offering an extensive educational experience that includes performing arts, dance, drama, and music.

Operating as an academy under the sponsorship of Shireland Collegiate Academy Trust, Thorns Collegiate Academy aims for nothing less than outstanding in its educational standards.
