This material change inspection finds that Compass Community School Essex is likely to meet the relevant independent school standards if its proposed changes are approved. The school wants to widen its age range, add a second site and increase its maximum pupil number from 18 to 78 across both sites. It is an independent special school for pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs, many of whom may also have autism or ADHD, and all pupils have an education, health and care plan. The school is part of Compass Community Schools Limited, a larger proprietor body running 22 other schools. The report paints a strong picture of leadership, curriculum, safeguarding and premises. The proprietor body provides robust central support and challenge, and school leaders understand pupils' needs well. The curriculum is ambitious, well sequenced and already covers the content needed for the proposed younger and older pupils. Assessment is well matched to the curriculum, safeguarding is a clear priority, and staffing ratios and site arrangements are suitable for the proposed expansion. Staff are well trained, checks on adults are robust, and both sites provide appropriate therapeutic, medical, outdoor and practical facilities. Leaders are taking a considered approach to growth, phasing the increase in pupils and training new staff so provision remains high quality. No significant weaknesses or areas of underperformance are identified in this inspection. The only minor point noted is that the medical room on the current site is a shared office, but it still has the required equipment and facilities.
