The Motiv8 School is an independent special school where all 11 pupils have an education, health and care (EHC) plan, primarily for social, emotional and mental health needs. This inspection found that the school meets safeguarding and welfare standards but does not meet the independent school standards for the quality of education, pupils' spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, or leadership and management. As a result, urgent improvements are required in the curriculum, teaching, personal development and leadership, while achievement, attendance and behaviour, and inclusion all require attention. The proprietor's oversight of the independent school standards is insufficient, and leaders' understanding of the school's strengths and weaknesses is not secure, leaving them with weak capacity to make necessary improvements.

Strengths

  • Safeguarding standards are met, with an open culture where concerns are actively identified and managed.
  • Staff deal with pupils' behaviour calmly and demonstrate a secure understanding of their social, emotional and mental health needs.
  • Pupils who attend regularly develop increasingly settled behaviour, learn to cooperate and show respect, and rates of suspensions reduce.
  • Bullying is rare and incidents are dealt with well and thoroughly when they occur.
  • Pupils are safe and well cared for, and leaders take suitable action to protect welfare during community activities.
  • Leaders develop strong and positive relationships with staff, parents and carers, and engage well with home local authorities.
  • Effective pastoral support helps some pupils understand and manage their emotions better over time.
  • Some pupils achieve useful qualifications that help them access further education, employment or training.

Areas for Improvement

  • The curriculum is narrow, focusing on vocational studies at the expense of English, mathematics and broader knowledge.
  • Pupils' achievement in writing is weak, and some written work is very difficult to read.
  • Achievement in subjects beyond English and mathematics is patchy, with recall and understanding lacking depth.
  • Leaders do not ensure that pupils progress to more advanced qualifications when they could, limiting career options.
  • Attendance is variable, and leaders do not make sufficient use of their knowledge of pupils to re-engage the most vulnerable.
  • Leaders do not consider pupils' differing academic and personal development needs well enough, so some pupils are not included equally well.
  • Teaching does not check what pupils know or understand well enough, and learning activities are often not well-matched to abilities.
  • Staff do not consistently identify or address gaps in pupils' learning or misconceptions, especially in writing.
  • The proprietor lacks sufficient oversight of the independent school standards and leaders have a weak understanding of the school's strengths and weaknesses.
  • The personal development and wellbeing programme is inappropriate, and relationships, health and sex education is ineffective.
  • Careers education, advice and guidance is not fit for purpose and lacks impartiality.
  • Pupils' understanding of diversity and modern Britain is underdeveloped, and some make derogatory comments about protected characteristics.
  • Opportunities to develop new interests, skills or talents are limited.
