Birtenshaw School Merseyside is an independent specialist school for pupils with complex special educational needs and/or disabilities, all of whom have education, health and care plans. Following this standard inspection, the school is judged to be performing at the expected standard overall, with all independent school standards met and safeguarding standards met. It helps pupils, many of whom arrive after disruption to their education or poor attendance, to make meaningful progress from their individual starting points, including in communication, behaviour, attendance, independence and readiness for learning. Pupils are safe, included and well supported. Leaders, governors and the proprietor body have maintained the school's effectiveness despite significant staffing changes and have strengthened oversight, quality assurance and leadership capacity. Post-16 provision has continued to develop and is a notable strength, with students well prepared for adulthood. However, there is variation in curriculum implementation: in a minority of instances pupils' work does not align fully with the planned sequence of learning, so curriculum thinking is not consistently translated into practice and pupils do not always build the intended depth of knowledge across all subjects. Handwriting and transcription approaches also need to be embedded more consistently. Some staff survey responses raise concerns about communication, leadership stability and aspects of staff experience, which leaders are aware of and addressing. Overall, the school is meeting expectations well, with clear next steps focused on improving consistency.
