Red Boots School (National Institute of Conductive Education) is a special school for pupils with complex physical and communication needs, all of whom have an education, health and care plan. In this standard inspection in May 2026, safeguarding standards were met and the school met all independent school standards. Inspectors found strong standards in attendance and behaviour and in inclusion, and the school's personal development and wellbeing provision is also strong. Pupils attend well considering complex medical needs, behave calmly, and benefit from warm, trusting relationships and a highly inclusive environment. Achievement, curriculum and teaching, and leadership and governance were judged at the expected standard. Pupils make secure progress from their starting points, particularly in physical development, communication, confidence and independence, and the curriculum is ambitious and tailored to individual needs. Leaders have a clear vision, governance provides appropriate support and challenge, and parents and partner schools express confidence. However, leaders should strengthen assessment across subjects so that learning pathways show progress and cumulative knowledge over time more clearly, and ensure professional development is applied consistently in the academic curriculum so that teaching is coherent and curriculum intent is translated accurately in all subjects. Curriculum sequencing is still developing and some activities do not consistently deepen understanding or secure progression.

- Curriculum sequencing is developing, and opportunities to build knowledge and skills over time are not always maximised.
- Some activities do not precisely support pupils to deepen understanding or strengthen progression.
