St Alban's Church of England Aided Primary School is a warm, inclusive and improving school where pupils feel safe and well cared for. Inspectors found strong personal development and wellbeing, calm and respectful behaviour, effective pastoral support and well-organised inclusion for vulnerable pupils, including those with SEND and disadvantaged pupils. Safeguarding standards are met, attendance is a high priority and improving, and governors, staff and parents speak positively about leadership. Most areas are performing securely in line with expectations. Pupils learn well overall, phonics and reading are prioritised, and disadvantaged pupils benefit from targeted enrichment, although national assessment outcomes for disadvantaged pupils in 2024/25 were below national averages. The main areas for development are writing, including early writing and consistency across subjects and year groups; making the key knowledge in every subject more precise; strengthening early years interactions and writing resources; and embedding leadership capacity, especially among newer middle leaders. The school has about 220 pupils, above-average SEN support and well-above-average location deprivation. Most senior leaders and the headteacher are relatively new, and governors have supported the school through leadership turbulence.

  • Disadvantaged pupils are prioritised for enrichment and wider opportunities.
  • Pupils behave with integrity, respect and confidence in the school's values.
  • Bullying and discriminatory comments are exceptionally rare and taken seriously.
  • Attendance is a high priority and has improved year on year, with persistent absence below the national average.
  • Inclusion is well organised, with high expectations and effective support for pupils with SEND.
  • Early reading and phonics are prioritised, with targeted help for pupils who need it.
  • Governors provide effective support and challenge and fulfil their statutory responsibilities well.
  • Staff are positive and proud to work at the school, and parents are highly complimentary.

Areas for Improvement

  • The writing curriculum needs to be consistently high quality and well taught across all subjects and year groups, including in the early years.
  • Teachers' decisions about what to teach in each subject are not always precise or rigorous, including in the early years.
  • In a few subjects, key knowledge is not taught with enough rigour and precision.
  • Early writing skills are not consistently reinforced: pencil grip, posture and letter formation are not always corrected or modelled.
  • Some early years interactions and writing tasks or resources do not extend children's thinking or promote high-quality writing.
  • Leadership capacity needs further development, especially among newer middle leaders, so next steps are implemented and achieved.
  • Recent 2024/25 outcomes for disadvantaged pupils were below national averages in reading, writing and combined reading, writing and mathematics.

Admissions: local authority offers data from the Department for Education. A school is oversubscribed when at least 5% of the families who put it first were not offered a place, and undersubscribed when everyone who put it first got in but 10% or more of its places were unfilled in the Department's school capacity survey (the latest survey is used for entry years it does not cover). Places: Department for Education, School capacity, from local authorities' annual survey as at 1 May. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024–25); the survey was not run in 2020. Places include sixth form places. Forecasts are the local authority's own for the school's planning area, an area it uses to plan places that is not the school's catchment area. The forecast starts from a head count in 2025; the dashed line is the Department's estimate of places in that area, including those the authority has firm plans for. Planned places are cumulative, and only those with firm plans are counted.

In 2024–25 pupils at St Alban's Church of England Aided Primary School attended 95.6% of sessions (the national figure for primary schools was 94.8%). 9.8% of pupils were persistently absent, missing at least one session in ten (nationally 13.0%).

Source: Department for Education, School workforce in England. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024/25). Pupils per teacher counts full-time-equivalent pupils and teachers. Turnover is the share of a year's teachers (full-time equivalent) who were not at the school the following year, whether they moved to another school or left state-funded teaching. Turnover and sickness figures run one year behind the ratios. Sick leave is the share of teachers who took at least one day in the year, so it swings widely at small schools, where a few teachers can make it 0% or 100%. The national figures are for all state schools of the same type.
