Silver Birch School is a small independent special school for pupils aged 11 to 17 with SEND, including social, emotional and mental health needs. Many pupils arrive after disrupted education, trauma, poor attendance or placement breakdown, and all 19 pupils on roll have an EHC plan. Inspectors found a school that knows its pupils exceptionally well and has built a calm, inclusive and nurturing culture. Safeguarding standards are met and all independent school standards are met. The strongest work is in attendance and behaviour. Leaders understand individual barriers and use personalised support to help pupils who previously refused school, were anxious or disengaged to attend regularly and participate positively. Behaviour is calm and purposeful, bullying is rare, and pupils feel safe and supported. Pupils achieve well from their starting points, especially in English and mathematics, and benefit from strong leadership, effective governance, tailored SEND provision and a broad personal development programme that prepares them well for adulthood. There are still areas to improve. Curriculum planning and sequencing are less consistent in physical education and art and design, so pupils do not build knowledge and skills as securely as in the strongest subjects. In personal development, the offer is broad but pupils do not consistently revisit key concepts deeply enough to secure their understanding. Oversight of alternative provision also needs strengthening, particularly through clearer written agreements setting out outcomes, reviews and accountability.
