Blackwater Academy

In this second progress monitoring inspection, Blackwater Academy now meets all of the independent school standards that were checked. The school had previously been judged not to meet all standards, largely because assessment was not systematic or diagnostic enough, including for pupils with SEND; leaders have since implemented an electronic initial assessment system, trained staff to use it, and embedded a spiral curriculum and regular ongoing assessment. As a result, teachers understand pupils' starting points well, adapt learning effectively, and pupils are making better progress and are more motivated. Other areas remain secure. Safeguarding continues to be effective, with a strong culture, vigilant staff, and a policy that reflects legislative requirements and local context. Recruitment checks and the single central record are well maintained, with no administrative errors. Leaders have a strong moral purpose, monitor the impact of their actions regularly, and keep pupils' wellbeing and progress central. Blackwater Academy is an independent school for pupils aged 12 to 20 with social, emotional and mental health needs, and many pupils remain on the roll of their mainstream school. No current weaknesses or non-compliance were identified in this inspection.
