Tiverton Academy

Tiverton Academy is a welcoming and inclusive primary school where pupils' wellbeing is prioritised and high expectations apply to all, including children in the early years and pupils with SEND. A new leadership team has made rapid improvements to the curriculum, particularly in English and mathematics, and this is already having a positive effect on outcomes, especially in early reading. Pupils generally behave well, feel safe, and benefit from a broad personal development programme and extra activities. The school's strengths include effective support for pupils with SEND, strong phonics provision, positive attitudes to learning, and secure trust oversight. Safeguarding arrangements are effective. Inspectors found that, in a few wider curriculum subjects, learning intentions are not always clear and tasks do not consistently help pupils acquire the intended knowledge and skills; assessment of pupils' recall and retention in these subjects is also at an early stage, so gaps may go unnoticed. This was the school's first routine inspection since March 2015, having previously been exempt as outstanding and then affected by the pandemic. The report asks leaders to continue developing the identified wider curriculum subjects and to strengthen assessment so that teachers can check how well pupils know and remember what they have learned.
