Pulse and Water College is a small independent school for pupils who have often experienced disrupted education, many with education, health and care plans mainly for social, emotional and mental health needs. At this inspection the school was judged to be performing at the expected standard across achievement; attendance and behaviour; curriculum and teaching; inclusion; leadership and governance; and personal development and wellbeing. Safeguarding standards and all independent school standards were met. The proprietor is also the headteacher, and in the absence of governors the school is held to account by the local authority and local schools that refer pupils. The school's main strengths are its caring, personalised approach and strong pastoral support. Pupils settle quickly, feel safe and build trusting relationships with staff. Leaders assess starting points carefully and use this to close gaps, attendance is followed up tenaciously, behaviour is usually calm, and the curriculum is carefully designed and sequenced. Pupils benefit from a well-planned PSHE programme, careers guidance, life-skills sessions and opportunities in music, sport and art. Staff feel well supported, and professional development, including recent SEND training, is having a positive impact. Areas for improvement are limited but clear. Teaching adaptations for pupils with SEND are not always as precise as they could be, and leaders should help staff deliver the curriculum consistently well so that all pupils learn as effectively as possible. Attendance remains an area of focus, despite positive work to remove barriers. Overall, this is a school fulfilling the expected standard and continuing to improve its provision for a vulnerable group of pupils.
