Since the previous inspection, leaders and the trust have improved the quality of education, including in the early years, so provision is now good across most areas, while personal development is outstanding. Pupils benefit from a strong wider curriculum, effective planning in reading, writing and mathematics, and a wide range of trips, sports and music, including a popular choir and a residential in Finland. Early years provision is particularly effective given that many children start below national expectations; a strong focus on communication, vocabulary and social skills helps them become confident and ready for key stage 1. Reading, writing and mathematics are logically sequenced from nursery to Year 6, staff identify gaps and adapt well for pupils with SEND and those who speak English as an additional language, and current pupils are becoming more fluent readers. Attendance is above average and safeguarding is effective. The main concern is the two specially resourced SEND provisions. Pupils are cared for and generally well supported, and pupils in the Hive integrate well into mainstream classes, but provision is not consistently adapted to individual learning needs, especially in reading and communication. Assessment does not always capture small steps in learning, and staff are not consistently trained in pupils’ precise needs, so some pupils, particularly in Bumblebees, do not make the learning gains they should.
