Beckfoot Nessfield is a good school that has improved since its previous inspection, when it was judged to require improvement. Inspectors found the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management, and early years provision all good. Pupils are happy, safe and calm in lessons, and the school places strong emphasis on kindness, manners and inclusion; pupils and staff describe it as a ‘no outsiders’ school. Safeguarding is effective. The school’s early years and phonics provision are particular strengths, with effective early mathematics and consistently high Year 1 phonics outcomes. Leaders have identified the curriculum knowledge and skills they want pupils to learn, and teachers are increasingly confident in subjects where they were previously less secure. Pupils talk well about their learning, although the strengthened curriculum is not yet reflected in published outcomes. Personal development and enrichment are well planned, attendance is improving, and staff workload is managed well. Two areas need further work. Support for pupils with SEND in the classroom is inconsistent, and some pupils become overly reliant on interventions that better first teaching might avoid. In mathematics, older pupils have gaps from studying a mix of old and new programmes; they do not always get enough practice, and attempts to close gaps are not consistently successful. The school is part of Beckfoot Trust and is managing a falling roll as it moves from two-form to one-form entry.
