Sacred Heart Catholic School is a small Roman Catholic primary in Birmingham and part of the St John Paul II Catholic Multi-Academy Company. It serves a community with well-above-average levels of disadvantage and special educational needs support. This full inspection found a school performing well overall: safeguarding requirements are met, and leaders have created a calm, inclusive and aspirational environment where pupils feel safe, attend well and behave positively. Leadership and governance, attendance and behaviour, personal development and inclusion are particular strengths. The quality of education is solid but less strong than the school's other areas. Pupils generally achieve in line with national averages, with current pupils performing better than older published data suggests, especially in mathematics. Reading and phonics are prioritised effectively, and disadvantaged pupils and pupils with SEND are well supported. However, in some subjects, teaching does not consistently match tasks to the intended curriculum, limiting how deeply pupils can apply their knowledge, and writing across the curriculum is not consistently strong. Leaders know the school well and are taking appropriate action. The main priorities are to ensure teachers consistently adapt learning so pupils build secure, deep knowledge across subjects, and to give pupils sufficient opportunities to apply writing skills to produce high-quality work. Early years provision is effective, though independent play could be used more consistently to deepen learning. Overall, this is a strong school with clear leadership, effective pastoral and inclusion work, and no significant safeguarding concerns.

Areas for Improvement

- In some subjects, teachers do not consistently plan learning that is closely matched to intended curriculum outcomes.
- Some pupils lack opportunities to apply their knowledge and tackle complex tasks across the curriculum.
- Resource choices in some lessons limit how much pupils write, so writing skills are not applied as deeply as they could be.
- Opportunities during independent play in early years could be used more consistently to deepen learning.
- The disadvantaged pupils' gap in mathematics remains notable in published data.

Admissions: local authority offers data from the Department for Education. A school is oversubscribed when at least 5% of the families who put it first were not offered a place, and undersubscribed when everyone who put it first got in but 10% or more of its places were unfilled in the Department's school capacity survey (the latest survey is used for entry years it does not cover). Places: Department for Education, School capacity, from local authorities' annual survey as at 1 May. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024–25); the survey was not run in 2020. Places include sixth form places. Forecasts are the local authority's own for the school's planning area, an area it uses to plan places that is not the school's catchment area. The forecast starts from a head count in 2025; the dashed line is the Department's estimate of places in that area, including those the authority has firm plans for. Planned places are cumulative, and only those with firm plans are counted.

Source: Department for Education, School workforce in England. Each year is the one the school year ends in (2025 is 2024/25). Pupils per teacher counts full-time-equivalent pupils and teachers. Turnover is the share of a year's teachers (full-time equivalent) who were not at the school the following year, whether they moved to another school or left state-funded teaching. Turnover and sickness figures run one year behind the ratios. Sick leave is the share of teachers who took at least one day in the year, so it swings widely at small schools, where a few teachers can make it 0% or 100%. The national figures are for all state schools of the same type.
