Chilton Bridge School is an independent special school for pupils with education, health and care plans, most of whom have significant histories of educational difficulty, trauma and disengagement. The school is judged to be working above expected standards in attendance and behaviour and in personal development and wellbeing, reflecting a strong relational ethos, carefully managed transition, excellent pastoral support and a rich enrichment programme. Safeguarding standards are met, and the proprietor's rigorous oversight ensures all independent school standards are satisfied. Achievement, curriculum and teaching, inclusion, leadership and governance, and post-16 provision are all evaluated at the expected standard, with pupils generally making positive progress from low starting points and moving on to positive destinations. The inspection identifies a small number of areas for further development. Leaders should ensure that all staff consistently use assessment to pinpoint and address gaps in pupils' knowledge, and they should strengthen their checks on the impact of improvement strategies so that gains are sustained. These are refinements rather than serious weaknesses; the school is otherwise described as a genuine turning point for many pupils, with high staff morale, strong community partnerships and a culture in which pupils feel safe, valued and included.
