Edward Pauling Primary School is a caring and inclusive school where pupils feel safe and enjoy attending. This was the school’s first routine inspection since the COVID-19 pandemic and its first since it was exempt from routine inspection after being judged outstanding in 2014. Although there are clear strengths, particularly in early years and personal development, the school is not yet delivering consistently high-quality education across the curriculum. Early years provision is a notable strength: children get a strong start, with a well-designed curriculum, meaningful adult interactions and a rich outdoor environment. Pupils’ personal development is also well considered, with opportunities for responsibility, fundraising, clubs and trips, and safeguarding arrangements are effective. Relationships are positive, most pupils behave well, and leaders have improved attendance and strengthened governance. However, the quality of education requires improvement. Curriculum implementation varies between subjects, expectations are not consistently high enough, and pupils’ reading and mathematics standards are not where they should be. The new phonics programme is not fully embedded and too many pupils fall behind; support for pupils with SEND is not precisely matched to need; and behaviour management is inconsistent when pupils lose concentration, disrupting learning. Leaders know what needs to change, but their ambitions are not yet fully realised in practice.
