Monkseaton Middle School is a smaller-than-average middle school serving a community with above-average free school meal eligibility and a well-above-average proportion of pupils with SEN support. Safeguarding requirements are met, and inspectors found a positive, inclusive culture. Inclusion and personal development/wellbeing are clear strengths: pupils are happy, safe and well cared for, receive strong pastoral support, and benefit from a thoughtful personal development and careers programme. The school is ambitious for pupils with SEND and other barriers to learning and offers a wide range of clubs. The main concerns are pupil achievement, attendance, and the consistency of curriculum delivery. Pupils do not achieve as well as they should because teachers do not consistently check what pupils know, meaning gaps in knowledge are not identified or addressed quickly enough. Mathematics outcomes at the end of Year 6 remain below national average, including for disadvantaged pupils. Too many pupils miss school, and although leaders have changed how they support persistently absent pupils, attendance has not improved quickly enough. The broad and ambitious curriculum is not delivered or checked consistently across all subjects and year groups, including for pupils with SEND. Leaders know the school and have selected sensible improvement priorities, but they have not precisely identified the underlying causes of weaknesses, so their actions have not improved attendance and attainment fast enough. Governors are committed and supportive but have not been rigorous enough in assuring themselves of school performance or challenging leaders. Staff feel well supported, and parents are positive, especially about pastoral care. The next steps focus on embedding attendance strategies, improving assessment and curriculum delivery, sharpening leaders' diagnosis of weaknesses, and strengthening governor oversight.

  • Leaders' actions to improve attendance have not brought improvement quickly enough.
  • Teachers do not deliver and check pupils' learning consistently across all subjects and year groups, including for pupils with SEND or other barriers.
  • In some subjects, teachers do not help pupils review prior learning or build on it, and do not identify gaps in knowledge.
  • Leaders have not precisely identified the underlying causes of weaknesses, so improvement actions have not been quick enough.
  • Leaders' plans have not had sufficient impact on attendance and attainment over time.
  • Governors have not taken a sufficiently rigorous approach to assuring themselves of school performance.
  • Governors have not always effectively challenged leaders to improve important aspects of the school.
