Oasis Academy Aspinal is a friendly, diverse and highly inclusive school where pupils achieve well above national averages in reading, writing and mathematics. Disadvantaged pupils attain particularly highly, well above disadvantaged pupils nationally, and pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities, pupils who join mid-year and pupils who speak English as an additional language settle quickly and learn successfully. Early years provision is strong, with a clear focus on language and social development, and children are well prepared for Year 1. Behaviour is calm and orderly, relationships are positive and bullying is rare. Attendance has a high priority, with leaders working closely with families to remove barriers. The curriculum is ambitious and well sequenced, teaching is effective, early reading is strong and inclusion is highly effective. Leadership and governance are accurate and well supported by The Oasis Academy Trust, staff wellbeing is considered, and personal development and pastoral support are carefully planned. The main improvement priorities are to strengthen the teaching of writing so that more pupils, including the most able, reach higher standards by the end of key stage 2, and to continue reducing persistent absence. Handwriting in some younger classes is less secure. The school serves a community with well-above-average free school meal eligibility and location deprivation, and leaders go to considerable lengths to support families so that pupils can attend and take part fully in school life.
