Poplar House School is an independent special school for pupils with education, health and care plans and a range of complex needs, including social, emotional and mental health needs. The school is commissioned by local authorities and currently has 24 pupils aged 11 to 19. This standard inspection found the school performing strongly across all evaluated areas, with safeguarding standards met and all independent school standards met. Inspectors also concluded that the school is likely to meet the relevant independent school standards if its proposed changes to increase pupil numbers and widen the age range are approved. Pupils join with significant gaps in their learning, but these reduce over time. They make clear progress in reading, writing and recall, and achieve qualifications that prepare them for education, training or employment. Attendance improves markedly from pupils’ starting points, behaviour is calm, and staff support pupils well when they find things difficult. The curriculum is carefully tailored to pupils’ needs, teaching responds to how well pupils understand, and inclusion is a notable strength. Leaders know the school well, support staff effectively, and work closely with external agencies to meet pupils’ complex needs. Personal development and wellbeing are also strong. Pupils learn about relationships, online safety and mental health in ways matched to their understanding, and they benefit from a wide range of enrichment activities. They develop practical independence skills and receive useful preparation for their next steps. No areas of concern were identified. The next steps ask leaders and proprietors to sustain this effectiveness and continue improving so that all pupils benefit.
