Selston Church of England Infant and Nursery School is a safe, nurturing and aspirational school where pupils, including young children in the two-year-old nursery, settle quickly and flourish. This was its first section 5 inspection; it is an academy in the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham Multi Academy Trust. Inspectors found the school good across the key judgements, with effective safeguarding, a broad and ambitious curriculum, strong reading and phonics, good behaviour, and positive personal development. Pupils achieve well in reading, writing and mathematics by the end of key stage 1, and pupils with SEND are identified quickly and supported to access the same learning as their peers. The main area for improvement is that, at times, staff do not use assessment information sharply enough to move children and pupils on to more demanding work when they are ready. Consequently, some pupils do not progress through the ambitious curriculum as well as they could, and learning is not always well matched to age and stage of development. Attendance is improving and persistent absence is falling. Parents are overwhelmingly positive, governance and trust support are effective, and staff value the attention to wellbeing and workload.
