The school meets all of the independent school standards checked at the time of this emergency inspection. It is an independent day school for pupils with SEND, many of whom have been excluded from other schools and most of whom have an EHCP. The inspection was prompted by DfE concerns about safeguarding and welfare, but inspectors found that leadership has acted effectively: an external audit was used to identify weaknesses, a substantive headteacher was appointed, systems and policies were updated, and rapid improvements have been made. Leaders, the proprietor and governors now carry out statutory duties effectively. Pupils benefit from an ambitious curriculum with mathematics and communication as priorities. Staff know pupils’ individual needs well, adapt teaching, use visual and physical resources, and help pupils make secure progress, including in life skills. Safeguarding is well managed: staff are highly vigilant, concerns are dealt with promptly, external help is sought quickly, and relationships with families are positive. Pupils behave well because staff understand their needs and help them regulate emotions, and the school has suitable behaviour, health and safety, risk assessment, admissions and premises arrangements. Some further development is still needed. The curriculum’s breadth and topic sequencing are not yet consistently well thought out, although changes are underway. Attendance procedures had not been robust in recent months, but recent changes mean attendance is now properly recorded. Health and safety and risk assessment policies are being updated to reflect differences between the two sites.
