Marston Green Junior is a welcoming, well-run school where pupils feel safe, behave exceptionally well and benefit from strong relationships with staff. Reading and writing are particular strengths: pupils read often, use a well-stocked library and receive prompt support to close gaps. Pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities are identified quickly and supported through effective adaptations, and staff benefit from strong professional development and support. Personal development is rich, with leadership roles, trips and a curriculum that promotes respect and inclusivity. Safeguarding is effective. The main concern is that some disadvantaged pupils do not have barriers to learning identified and addressed consistently, so their outcomes lag behind peers in some curriculum areas. This is especially evident in mathematics, where gaps in foundational knowledge hinder later learning and results are weaker than in reading and writing. Leaders have begun work to address this, but it is too early to see impact in published results. The school was previously exempt from routine inspection and received an ungraded inspection in 2020; this 2024 graded inspection took place under the current framework, under which no overall effectiveness grade is awarded.
