Talmud Torah London is a strictly Orthodox Jewish independent day school for boys, with 120 pupils on roll and a high proportion of pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities. At its June 2026 standard inspection, it was judged to be meeting the expected standard across all evaluated areas, including achievement, attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, inclusion, leadership and governance, and personal development and wellbeing. Safeguarding standards are met, and all independent school standards are met. The school’s strongest features are its inclusive ethos, strong attendance systems, positive behaviour and a well-established phonics and reading programme. Leaders have strengthened curriculum structures, staff development and leadership after significant recent changes, including the appointment of a new headteacher and two deputy headteachers in April 2026, and they maintain focus despite ongoing uncertainty about the future use of the premises. Pupils feel safe, valued and part of a close-knit community, and personal development is tailored well to the school’s context. However, teaching is not consistently precise in checking pupils’ understanding and addressing misconceptions, and higher-attaining pupils are not always challenged when ready for new content. Information about pupils is not always used sharply enough to adapt lessons, which creates some variability in how well gaps are addressed, including for pupils with SEND. The next steps rightly target these areas so that pupils develop secure, precise knowledge and skills over time.

Strengths

  • Inclusion is a clear strength, with leaders identifying and supporting pupils’ individual needs promptly.
  • Pupils’ attendance remains high because systems are well embedded and absence is followed up daily.
  • Behaviour is orderly and respectful, and pupils feel safe, valued and ready to learn.
  • A consistent phonics and reading programme helps pupils read accurately, build fluency and apply skills independently.
  • Leaders have strengthened the curriculum, staff development and leadership structures, driving improvement especially in reading and inclusive practice.
  • Pupils benefit from a close-knit, welcoming community where they feel a deep sense of belonging.
  • Personal development is tailored to the school’s context and helps pupils reflect on beliefs, respect difference and stay safe online and offline.
  • Pupils, including disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND, generally make positive progress because barriers are reduced and effective support is provided.
  • Staff manage transitions carefully, supporting pupils’ welfare, stability and continuity in learning.
  • Enrichment opportunities, visits, practical activities and clubs broaden pupils’ experiences and build new interests.

Areas for Improvement

  • Assessment is not always used precisely within lessons or in pupils’ work, so misconceptions are not identified and addressed promptly.
  • Higher-attaining pupils are not consistently challenged when they are ready for new content, limiting their depth of understanding.
  • Information about pupils is not always used with sufficient precision to adapt teaching, leading to variability in how well lessons address gaps.
  • Adaptations and strategies in lessons are not always well matched, which can reduce their effectiveness for pupils with SEND.
