Established in 1960 as Ashington County Grammar School, it became a comprehensive school in the mid-1970s and later a foundation school under the administration of Northumberland County Council and the Ashington Learning Partnership. In November 2017, Ashington High School converted to academy status and assumed the name Ashington Academy, sponsored by the North East Learning Trust.
The school offers a comprehensive curriculum from age 11 to 18, with GCSEs and BTECs as programmes of study for its pupils. Additionally, the sixth form presents a range of A-levels and further BTECs. Ashington Academy aims to be at the heart of its community, fostering a culture of deep pride.
Notable former pupils from the school's past incarnations include prominent figures such as Labour Party politician Hilton Dawson and professional cricketers Steve Harmison and Mark Wood.
