This full inspection found the school generally performing as expected: pupils attain well in national examinations at the end of Year 11, follow a well-organised curriculum, and are well prepared for further study, employment or training. Reading has a high priority, pupils with SEND and disadvantaged pupils are generally well supported, staff feel valued, and safeguarding standards are met. The main concerns are attendance and some unevenness in provision. Attendance has declined over three years, disadvantaged pupils' attendance has been below the national average, and leaders' recent actions are only beginning to have an impact. The gap between disadvantaged pupils and their non-disadvantaged peers has widened, modern foreign languages does not yet secure high achievement for enough pupils, and the common teaching approach is not fully embedded. The report also notes that citizenship teaching needs further development and that some parents, particularly parents of pupils with SEND, want more regular communication about their child's needs and support. Inspectors found clear strengths in behaviour and personal development: pupils are friendly and courteous, bullying is uncommon, and pupils feel safe and happy. Leaders provide a broad programme of personal development, including a resilience curriculum and careers guidance, and governance and trust support are effective. The inspection also noted a serious incident since the previous inspection and the school's use of alternative provision, including unregistered providers, as part of the context considered.
