Description
betaBarclay Academy is a renowned secondary school and sixth form located in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, England. The institution opened in 1949, making it the first post-World War II purpose-built secondary school in the UK. To celebrate its historic roots, Barclay Academy received an architectural award as part of the Festival of Britain in 1951.
Under the leadership of Dr. Matthew Laban, Barclay Academy fosters a diverse environment that educates students aged 11 to 18—a student population totaling approximately 1,100. Established with a mixed gender cohort, Barclay Academy upholds a motto—"Libertas per cultum" (Learning for liberty)—and colors of blue. The school recognizes students through four houses and prides itself on a publication, the "Barclay Bugle".
Barclay Academy is housed within elegant architectural structures and features an impressive piece of art, the bronze sculpture "Family Group" by Henry Moore, which graced the school's main entrance since its incorporation and is now on display inside the building. The sculpture was relocated following an attempted robbery in 2009.
Additionally, Barclay Academy became an academy and came under the supervision of Future Academies Trust in February 2019.
